Mums the Word Mum Farm - Field Trip & Pot Luck
To kick off MGWWC meetings for the season, members met at Mums the Word Mum Farm in New Boston to shop from the marvelous selection of lovely mums and other assorted plants right from their fields. Everyone brought a dish to pass and got a chance to catch up with fellow Master Gardeners about their Summer growing successes and commiserate about the drought.
Crop Mob Kudos go out to the group who attended the DTE Garden's crop mob event this past Saturday, September 22.
Here's a rundown of the crops that were harvested. All numbers relate to poundage of each crop harvested:
Eggplant-11 lbs., corn-19 lbs., green beans-19 lbs.,okra-3 lbs., tomatoes-205 lbs, acorn squash-28 lbs., hubard squash-9 lbs., chard-42 lbs., sweet banana peppers-7 lbs., butternut squash-373 lbs., watermelon-100 lbs., jalapeno peppers-12 lbs., potatoes-49 lbs., hot wax peppers-47 lbs., winter squash-140 lbs., zucchini-3 lbs., and yellow summer squash-1 lb. Total weight of harvest was 1068 pounds for Gleaners Food Bank and the area soup kitchens! This was the second largest 1 day harvest to date. Total harvest of all produce to date is 7606 pounds. This total goes far, far beyond the expectations of the Westland garden site. There is still maybe 1000 pounds still remaining to be harvested within the next few weeks. Cover Crops with Kristine Hahn
We had a great turnout for our November meeting and election. A big, "thank you," to Kristine Hahn, MSUE Educator, for the excellent presentation about the benefits of using cover crops in our gardens.
Make A Senior Smile Day 2012
Once again, MGWWC participated in the annual Make a Senior Smile Day with Commissioner Diane Webb. The day was beautiful and we definitely made four seniors' day brighter by raking leafs, pruning and doing fall cleanup in their yards.
