History

The Master Gardeners of Western Wayne County (MGWWC) organization was established in the summer of 2006 with the purpose of forming an affiliated organization with Michigan State University’s Master Gardener program.  We adopted the MSU by-laws and first Board of Directors was formed.  The MGWWC were interested in promoting gardening and related activities, which has transformed from promoting to also providing exceptional educational and volunteer gardening opportunities.

In 2008, a greenhouse committee was established to help support our club through humble plant profits.  To this day, our members plant from seed, nurture and grow vegetables and herbs, starting every January in time for our May sale.  Come check out our green house and consider joining this or one of the many other committees that may better fit your interests!

The first Board began over potluck dinners -- and the tradition of picnics, parties and social activities continues!  Our success is indicated by our steady increase in membership numbers.  Please join us at our next outing and consider joining the MGWWC!

Volunteering - Giving Back to the Community

Each year Wayne County Master Gardeners contribute over 500,000 volunteer hours to enhance the gardens and lives of those who live in our communities.  Our members volunteer in a multitude of projects such as:
  • The creation and maintaining of various community gardens, such as the Goodwill Garden and the DTE Gardens throughout the Metro Detroit area
  • Make a Senior Smile Day, every November, to conduct fall cleanup in the yards of qualifying Seniors
  • Awarding grants and scholarships
  • Designing and providing inexpensive garden related classes
  • The annual sale of heirloom tomato plants, flowers and herbs raised from seed in our greenhouse along with other gardening-related merchandise
